Celebrate Women's History

womens%20history.jpg Each time a girl opens a book and reads a womanless history, she learns she is worth less. Myra Pollack Sadker

Did you know that March is National Women’s History Month? This year’s theme is “Generations of Women Moving History Forward” and is designed to help celebrate the “wisdom and tenacity of prior and future generations of women” and to recognize the “power and impact of generations working together.”

The celebration of Women’s History started in 1978 as just a week in March. Over the years, the celebration has been so well received that it has been expanded to cover the whole month of March. The National Women’s History Project has created a nationwide group of people to help educate the world of the incredible contribution women have made in history, as well as the contribution we continue to make.

From workshops and conferences to education in elementary schools and working with groups like the Girl Scouts, the NWHP works to make sure women’s impact in history is not forgotten or neglected. The saying that when we forget our history we are destined to repeat it has little foothold here with the work of this organization! Knowing where women have come from and the struggles they have overcome, the battles they have fought on their home fronts for the rights we enjoy today help us to better understand ourselves and helps us to have confidence and respect for the women around us.

Don’t miss out on your chance to get involved, or at the very least, to support your local community in their efforts to celebrate this holiday. You’ve got the whole month of March to do so! If you want to find ways to get more involved, check out the NWHP website, where they have a great amount of resources, such as press releases, printable brochures, a sample proclamation, and press kits.
