Celebrate with fireworks!

It's kind of ironic that one the holiday best known for fireworks display, there are only 2 places in our town that will be having a public display of them. It used to be, when I was growing up, that you could have your pick of places around town to go to, sometimes if you timed it right you could catch more than one show. Now, due to new fire regulations, the cost, and new buildings having been built in the possible line of the fireworks, the shows have slowly disappeared.

This year, we will be spending the holiday across town with my sister's family, celebrating a birthday instead of the holiday. Her youngest was born on the 4th, and will be 2 this year. Something tells me that there will still be fireworks, even if they're not the professional, light-up-the-sky kind. Living in the country does have it's advantages...

But, in grand tradition, there will be a cookout, and we will be surrounded by family and friends, so we'll have two out of the three big traditions. I suppose that they'll be hosting these birthday parties for years to come, so until we determine what our own family's tradition for the 4th of July will be, we will be celebrating with them.

The one thing that I do greatly miss is the fireworks show that they used to have at the county fair. Our fair used to have fireworks on the 4th and a day or so afterwards. Unfortunately, they're in line with some new buildings that went up and now can't set them off because the buildings are too close. (Stupid fire hazards...) If they still had that display, we'd be rushing from the cook-out to the fair to make the show at the end of the night - and maybe pick up some fried Oreos for dessert...

Maybe you should join us next time at the park. It was fantastic and your birthday celebration will be over by then.
