Celebrate those personal holidays!

bday%20cake.bmp It’s kind of funny; we don’t really consider birthdays to be a holiday – maybe that’s because only those in our immediate circle of family and friends celebrate them. But why not? We all have them, and they’re our own personal holiday. My family just passed just such a holiday – kind of. My first son’s due date was the 20th, just this past Tuesday. We looked forward to this day with such excitement; imagine our surprise when he decided to make his appearance exactly three weeks early! So now, instead of celebrating his birthday at the end of February, his own “personal” holiday is the end of January and February 20th is his 3-week birthday!

(Oh, and he now shares a birthday with Franklin Roosevelt, Gene Hackman, and Vanessa Redgrave, just to drop a few famous names. My husband shares his day with Walt Disney! Want to know who shares your day? Check out the Celebrity Birthday link at FamousRoots.com.)

However we choose to celebrate our birthday, we should at least acknowledge our own personal holiday and give ourselves a little pampering. Hey, and if anyone wants to, let them throw you a little party and make a big deal about you! I know that as much as I may not ever admit it out loud to my family and friends, I like it when they make a big deal about me… and now that I’ve got a child of my own, I can’t wait until he’s old enough to throw parties for!

Maybe I’m overly ambitious, but I’m so excited about making his birthday special – throwing theme parties and inviting his friends over, surprise parties, little finger foods specifically for kids… I grew up with two friends whose familiy always really did up birthdays. We were always hearing about how their parents would decorate their rooms while they slept so when they got up there was always something crazy in their room on their birthday, like a plastic tarp with shaving cream on the floor. For their parties, they would have their own “Double Dare” party at the local swimming pool. I guess I’ll find out sooner or later that I’m being a little overly ambitious. Oh well, I can dream. Besides, like I said, he’s only 3 weeks old, so I’ve got plenty of time to plan!
