Beware some holiday toys

As the frantic holiday shopping begins, please keep a few things in mind when buying for children! As great and fun as some toys seem to be, remember that safety should come first. As relative, if in doubt, ask the parent's opinion before making your purchase. As a parent, if in doubt, check the toy out online to see if you can find any product information or consumer reports.

W.A.T.C.H. Inc (World Against Toys Causing Harm) has put out a yearly "Top 10" list of their worst rated toys. Although this obviously doesn't contain every toy you should be wary of, it does give you a start, and a list of things to be on the lookout for. Things to consider when buying toys, especially for young children should be:

1. Is there anything on it that would be a choking hazard? Small pieces that can come off?

2. Is there anything sharp or potentially sharp if a part were to come off?

3. For a child who isn't walking well, is it soft enough that a fall onto the toy would not be harmful?

4. Is there any part of the toy that could cause strangulation? (a long cord)

5. Is any part of the toy a fire hazard?

These are obviously just a few things to think about. I'm sure seasoned parents could add much more to the list, but this should at least get you started. I know it's given me a few things to think about, and boy am I going to need all the guidance I can get come February when our first little boy arrives!
