Don't forget that this coming Tuesday is St Patrick's Day - so remember to dig out something green to wear!
Did you know that the tradition of wearing something green on St Patrick's Day came from the phrase "the wearing of the green" - originally meaning to wear a shamrock on one's clothes? Yeah, me either. The shamrock has long been identified with St Patrick's Day, but I never stopped to question why. It just always has been. Apparently, St Patrick used the shamrock to explain the concept of the trinity to the Irish people.
The holiday began as strictly a religious one but has morphed over the years to be something less than a religious celebration. Now we recognize the holiday as a celebration of Irish culture, enjoying the food and drink of the country and making sure to have something green to keep from getting pinched! (Still am not a big fan of that practice...) While I can't say there are many Irish dishes that sound appetizing, I guess I have to admit a large amount of ignorance on the cuisine, as corned beef and cabbage is about the only thing that comes to mind right of the bat. Although I have found that AllRecipes.com has a pretty good variety of recipes that might just convert me... starting with their Irish Cream Chocolate Cheesecake and their Hot Artichoke and Spinach Dip - YUM!
I also have to say that after checking out their recipes and their information on Corned Beef, I'm wondering why it is that I've always said I didn't like it. I can't honestly remember the last time I tried any, and other than the fact that the meat appears pretty pink (which I have to admit I mostly like my meat cooked at least medium), it looks pretty good... maybe I'll have to give it another try. Hmmm, and digging into their St Patrick's Day recipes has me hungry! Looks like a trip to the grocery store is in order. We may just have to throw together a last minute St Patrick's Day party!
Enjoy the holiday and don't forget to wear the green!
