Are you ready for Halloween?

Halloween pumpkin.jpg It's barely September, but the signs of Halloween are everywhere! My parents went to Wal-Mart the other day and came home with bags and bags of candy - and we don't even get trick-or-treaters where we live! (I have to admit, it's been about all I can do to keep from picking up some of that candy myself!) Even Lowes is sporting a wicked witch with scary out-of-the-socket eyeballs that roll around while it makes gruesome, scary noises!

Are you ready for Halloween? If so, you're ahead of me by a long shot! I realize that it will be here before I know it, but maybe I'm just in denial. I don't know about you, but to me it seems that once Halloween hits, Thanksgiving and Christmas - then the end of the year, New Years, and then January are just moments away. The time seems to hit fast-forward in the fall, and it gets away from me so quickly!

Don't get me wrong, I think fall is probably my favorite season, but I'd better not think about that too much, there's reasons for me to love all the seasons! There's just something about hot apple cider, hot chocolate, the beautiful leaves, the rustle sound they make underfoot, the crispness in the air that warrants a sweater but isn't unpleasantly cold... a warm fire in the fireplace or outside to roast marshmallows over, I could go on and on! It's just how quickly the season passes that makes me sad. That and the craziness that comes with getting ready for all the other holidays. You spend all this time planning and cleaning, shopping and cooking for Thanksgiving, then in the space of just a few hours it's over and all you've got left is a mess of dishes and leftovers that you're going to be sick and tired of in a day or so! Christmas is the same - although I really enjoy how it gets drug out by some places - such as the advent candles at church or decorating the Christmas tree in advance. But still, you rush around shopping and wrapping and spending money like mad, only to have the gifts ripped into all at once on Christmas morning. I loved an old family tradition we used to have growing up that somehow got phased out over the years... we used to get together at my grandmother's house and each take turns opening our gifts. That was we could all see and enjoy each others gifts. Now because there are so many impatient kids, they all rip into them at once and most of the time you don't know who got what or if someone even liked your gift.

But I digress... I set out to write about Halloween! How did I get to Christmas? It's funny, I get a recipe email newsletter that I usually open, scan and then trash, but for some reason I actually read it the other day. (I'm desperate for some new recipes!) I never realized that the newsletter is somehow connected to Martha Stewart's website. I clicked on one of the links and it took me to an online quiz - Do you know your ghosts from your goblins. I'm proud to say that I'm not too shabby on my Halloween info, I got 5 out of 7. Hey, that's not too bad! How about you, how educated are you about these kinds of thing? Check out the quiz and see how you score.

So, are you ready for Halloween, and if so, do you have any tips for us procrastinators?
