Are you happy?

In a world where it sometimes seems politically incorrect to report on good news and talk about happiness, I never knew there was such a thing as the SSOHP - or the Secret Society of Happy People. They believe that "happiness is contagious and that when more people talk about happy events and moment, it will be chic for everyone to do it."

Their mission is to "encourage the expression happiness and discourage parade raining" - a rather good mission if you ask me! In 1999, the SSOHP declared August Happiness Happens Month (originally called "Admit You're Happy Month"). The purpose of the holiday is to recognize and express happiness and to not rain on other people’s parades - which is sometimes so easy to do, isn't it?

Pessimism and just plain grouchiness seems to invade our everyday lives. The boss is a jerk, our coworkers don't pull their weight, the kids don't obey, our spouses don't appreciate us... Not to mention the world in general is going crazy, and life in general can sometimes suck. Sorry to be so candid, but it's the truth. So it seems to me that we could really benefit from this holiday.

Right now for me, one of my favorite ways to celebrate the happiness in my life is just to sit and play with my 6-month-old little boy. His cute little baby laughter is enough to take the stress of the day away. Everything is so new and good to him. There’s nothing bad or wrong with the world, at least not until naptime!
