Are you going shopping on Black Friday?

Unfortunately for us, I don't have a "list" of what I'm getting for who for Christmas. You would think I should know our family well enough to have a general idea of what I'd like to get for them. But somehow, as our family grows each year, everyone seems to get harder to buy for. Maybe it's because over half of them aren't my immediate family - including my husband's TWO families (you know, the typical American family where his parents are divorced and remarried with new families) and they both live out of state. So when we do see them, we don't get to spend a lot of time finding out what they'd like for gifts.

Also, it's hard to know what age to draw the line at as far as buying gifts for people. Two of my cousins who are younger than me have always been on my list of "to buy for," but they are now out of high school with babies of their own. SO, I guess I can consider them "adults" and buy only for their children, which doesn't help me cut back my shopping list but at least I'm buying for babies instead of harder-to-shop-for "near-adults."

It also doesn't help that I LIKE to give gifts. So it's not like I hate shopping or anything, I just don't know what to get for everyone... And, I guess I have to mention that like most people, I don't have money coming out of the woodwork, and with a baby of our own on the way (just in time for Christmas!) we don't have $$ to spare.

So, as I weed through my list of who's left to purchase for, I come back to the conundrum of whether or not to attempt to go out on Black Friday. I suppose for me it boils down to whether or not my husband will keep our son so I can go out - because I am NOT taking a toddler out in those mobs! Especially since I would most likely be wandering aimlessly, hoping for inspiration to strike.

Which leads me to another question: How many people actually plan what they're going to buy for the people on your list? Do you have a general idea of "sister: sweater, mom: necklace..." or are you more like me and wing it? Sometimes I come up with some great gifts that I'm really happy with - like for my sister I found two books that I'm pretty sure she's going to love. But my brother-in-law on the other hand... I thought we had a great gift idea. My husband and I saw a movie that we really enjoyed and so we decided to buy it for him thinking he'd enjoy it also. In conversation about recent movies, that one came up to which he promptly said "I will never watch that movie." Ugh. Okay, so do I take it back and try something else or just give it anyway?

Sigh... maybe I don't always love shopping...
