And the Xbox rules for the day...

...at least at my house anyway. Tomorrow, July 8th, and apparently also September 12th, is "Video Game Day." Okay, yeah, so I looked it up online and don't seem to find that designation anywhere expect for the Holiday Insight page, but I don't think my husband will care if no one else is celebrating. On the other hand, I haven't told him about it, so maybe I'll be spared losing him to a full day of games...

I hate to admit it, but I'm a gaming widow. You know how some wives are work widows or golf widows or hunting or fishing widows? I'm a gaming widow. Most often, I'm a Halo widow, and when Halo 3 comes out this September, it won't matter if my husband has heard of the September 12th "Video Game Day," he'll be celebrating anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-video games. And they have been proven to help with hand-eye coordination and even some learning skills. But I'm just not sure I want my kids absorbed with them. What ever happened to playing outside and using your imagination? Remember when kids had those? (Yes, I realize that there are plenty of parents who may take offense at that, but face it, there are just as many kids who aren't using theirs!)

At our house, thankfully, there is just one game that consistantly calls my husband's name: Halo. Since Halo 1 and 2 have been out for several years, they have somewhat lost their appeal, so I usually only lose him to games once or so a month, and then it's to the retro games you can download from Xbox live... Although he is a little interested in the new Wii that's come out recently. However I think his interest is more in upgradeing his 360 to the 360 Elite with the bigger hard drive. (There's always something bigger and better out there!)

my%20boys%20gaming.jpg The thing that I'm worried about is when our little boy gets big enough to play is that he will soon be indoctrinated into the "wonderful world of gaming." I guess it's up to me to be the voice of reason and limit the use of the gaming systems, but since it's one of my husband's favorite de-stressors, if our son is especially interested in gaming, it's going to be hard to step in between them! Already my husband is sitting him with him as he plays!

I guess in the meantime, I can tolerate a few days here and there of the games. I fully expect that if all possible at his workplace, my husband will take a week off of work to stay home and play the new Halo 3 when it comes out in September. (Yes, I'm serious - he did the same thing the year Halo 2 came out. I'm not kidding.)
